The Challenge of Hope

"We have always held to the hope, the belief, the conviction that there is a better life, a better world, beyond the horizon."
                                                               Franklin D. Roosevelt

Hope is what drives us. When us all fails, when we all we see is blackness in the horizon, it is the hope that tomorrow will bring a better day than today that lifts us all out of bed in the morning. It is this belief, above all else, that inspires humanity to strive toward perfection.

As I prepare for my upcoming travels in Dominica and begin sifting through the information offered to me about the country in it's resources, I am struck by the story of the House of Hope. It is the supreme example for the quote above, a testimony to how the human spirit does not give up or surrender in even the most heinous of circumstance.

For the readers who may not know, the House of Hope is a center that is dedicated toward providing twenty-four hour care for persons of severe physical and mental disabilities. It's origins hark back to 2005, when two women in their med-thirties with disabilities lost their care-giver, their mother. The community rallied around these two now orphans, protecting and taking care of these two in a small, rented building. As the efforts of the community were noticed, donations began to pour in and a formal building was constructed in 2008.

What strikes me about this story is that the community not only believed that they could provide a future for these two-women, but through perseverance brought about a center where a multitude of people are being helped, and will be helped. These people reached out, "beyond the horizon" and brought about a better world.

As will all of us. I look forward to it.
